Hard-drive defragmentation with PerfectDisk - How to quicky defragment your disks
Author: A. I. Admin
Defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.
Disk fragmentation occurs on your computer because the Windows file systems breaks up files into pieces. A single file (e.g. DOC, XLS, MP3, AVI, etc.) can be split into hundreds or thousands of pieces. When this occurs, the file is spread out over a disk drive, resulting in slower times to read the file. And when remaining free space is also fragmented, a common occurrence, it causes delays in writing new files and modifying existing files. All this is a drain on the performance of your PC, laptop, server, or virtual drive. Besides slower performance, you’ll also experience slow boot times, and random computer and application crashes and freezes.
All this can be solved by PerfectDisk, the world’s leading disk defragmenter for home users, small businesses, and large enterprises. Only PerfectDisk provides single-pass disk defragmentation, ensuring slower rates of fragmentation, reduced resource consumption, and free space consolidation, resulting in your computer running as fast as possible.
PerfectDisk 10 has some unique feature which make it a top defragmentation program:
SMARTPlacement is PerfectDisk’s patented optimization strategy that goes beyond basic defragmentation. Besides defragmenting your drives, PerfectDisk optimizes your drives so they are in the best possible condition. This patented optimization technique automatically organizes files according to your unique usage patterns. The result is faster boot times, faster defragmentation runs, reduced resource consumption, and slower refragmentation of your drives. All done in a single defrag pass.
PerfectDisk’s exclusive Space Restoration Technology gives you the largest piece of contiguous free space possible. This helps ensure new files are created in a single piece, thereby reducing refragmentation of your drives. Free space consolidation also ensures the fastest write performance possible. In addition to the faster read performance provided by file defragmentation.
Exclusive StealthPatrol™ automatic defrag. Work uninterrupted to speed your computer and use your computer at maximum efficiency, PerfectDisk’s StealthPatrol feature lets defrag only during computer idle times.
With PerfectDisk’s unique Selected Files Defrag option, you have complete control over the files you defrag – you can choose to defragment just a single file or selected group of files. This can be useful for particularly large files that are modified often, reducing the need to defragment the entire drive.
PerfectDisk offers a host of features to help you better understand and manage the space on your drive. Easily free up wasted space, remove unnecessary duplicate files, see a graphical view of your files and directories, and get a complete set of space management reports to quickly analyze space distribution of your files and folders.

Using PerfectDisk is quite easy. Once you have istalled the application, you can start immediately to defragment your partitions. As for defrag options, you can choose between obtaining the largest piece of contiguous free space possible, defragment only or consolidation of free space. I personally use defrag only for active partitions (the partition where Windows is installed), while on other partittions containing data I select the consolidation of free space. In the above picture you can see the ongoing defragmentation of partition c:\.
Other than defragmenting your disks, Perfect disk can be used to consolidate free space on your drives in order to increse drive performance by uncluttering the written data. You can also get detailed reports regarding data storage and free space.

Another useful tool included in PerfectDisk is the duplicate file finder. You can use this tool to scan your drives for duplicate files and delete them in order to gain mare space on disk. (see image below)
