How to Use Microsoft Bing Search Engine: Review and User Guide

Internet studies show that in 2009, there are four and a half websites created every second as the web continues to expand. Therefore, Microsoft decided that it's time for a lot more refined search results delivered to the Internet user. They decided to work with the concept of 'decision engine' for the way people search for stuff on the Internet. Indeed, I believe that Bing may be a real competitor for Google, although it may me early to make prophecies.
So, let's take a closer look a Bing (http://www.bing.com) itself. There are a few highlights wich really maek Bing a truly complex search engine: Localization, best match, related searches, deep links, website preview, web groups, advanced image search, video preview. I will concentrate on these features since I found them mostly relevant. The are others as well, and I'm sure there will be more to come.
First of all, the new search engine has localization, this means that you can set the language of the region you live in or you can customize your Bing page.

So far, there are 58 countries/regions avalable to choose from. One noticeable difference is that United States user have a few extra search options such as image, video, shopping, news, maps and travel custom search options.

Now, let's get down to business: the search results. Microsoft take pride on the fact that they deliver a so called 'best match' - the most helpful information from the most authoritative sites for your query — a top user request to help prevent disappointment. Actually, there are lot of websites which haven't been indexed yet, so we can speak about best matches from a percentage of the existing websites out there. Still, let's not forget that Bing is in Beta, so there's room for improvement and, after all, time will tell.
When delivering search results, Bing will not only display a list, but each item on the list may contain deep links so that you can preview the website in question. This means that when hovering the mouse over a search result (a website) users can actually see inside the site without having to click into it and learn a new site structure.

Of course, there are also related searches on display, in case you might be interested as well as the search auto completetion feature.

Another useful feature of Microsoft's Bing is the Web Groups displayed for certain searches. I saerched for New York and, besides the list of result, on the left hand side of the screen I could see a group containing Map, Weather, Attractions, Tourism and Travel. Clicking any of those items in the Web Group would narrow my search in order to get more specific results.

Last, but not least the image search surprised me in a good way. On the left had side of the results page, I could find some options to narrow my aerch such as image size, layout, color, style and so on.

When it comes to video search, it all gets even better: the Smart Video Preview feature allows the user to preview a 30-second clip of videos simply by scrolling onto them. Of course, you can also narrow your video aerch by selecting filters such as video lenght, screen size, rezolution and sourse. Neat.

Don't forget, before starting to use Microsoft's Bing, you can customize your page by clicking on the 'Extras' button in the upper right corner of the window and selecting 'Preferences' from the drop-down menu. Happy browsing.
