Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not cover yet. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you worked on. And for professional users, it allows to fix some registry inconsistencies and offers some extended reporting features.

Spybot Search&Destroy Configuration Guide

Although the program has been successfully installed onto your system, there are also a few steps to compete in order to use this program at its full potential.

When you run the program for the first time, a small window will pop up warning you not to remove some components. Just click 'OK' to proceed to the next step. Make sure you check the 'Don't show this message again' box, so this message won't bother you again.

The next step (3) of the configuration guide contains an opportunity to create a Windows Registry backup. It may be useful in case something goes wrong and you'll need to restore the registry to a previous state. While creating the Registry backup, the program may stop responding for a short while. Don't worry, just be patient and wait until the 'Next' button becomes active again.

The next step (5) deals with system updates. I strongly advise you to 'Search for updates'. Since the number of spyware is growing, program updates are a very important isssue and the key to keeping your system clean and safe from the latest threats.

After you clicked the 'Search for updates' button, a window will appear asking you to select an update server. Choose any server or leave the default one and click 'Continue'.

Next, a window will appear containing the latest updates to be downloaded. Select them all, they don't take much drive space. After selecting all updates, click 'Download'. After all the updates have been downloaded, a small dialog box will show up confirming the download. Click 'OK' and proceed to the next step.

Here, in step 6, you can immunize you system again after the updates have been downloaded.  Click 'Immunize this system' to complete the task. Wait for a short period until the immunization is applied and then click 'Next', then, in the final step of this wizard, start using the program.

qBittorrent - Kubuntu BitTorrent Client
(Kubuntu)Published: July 10, 2008

Unlike Ubuntu which is packaged with Gnome, for the KDE desktop that comes with Kubuntu is a little bit harder to find native clients, or clients which fit good on your desktop. However, there are a couple of clients which are accesibile: KTorrent and qBittorrent. There is another client which fits with Kubuntu, but being available only as source package makes it to be appropriate for the advanced users. If you're OK with the source code compiling, then go ahead for FatRat, otherwise, stick to the already existing clients.

Using BitTorrent clients under Ubuntu - Azureus
(Ubuntu)Published: June 13, 2008

Although under Linux you won't find BitTorrent clients such as uTorrent and BitComet which are popular under Windows OS, or at least you can't run them under as native binaries, however you can find very good alternatives. Since I am going to write about Ubuntu clients, thus appropriate for the Gnome desktop environment, I am not going to mention the clients which are typical for KDE. Under Gnome there are some popular clients such as Deluge, Transmission, and Azureus. However, Deluge and Azureus have Windows builds, thus for some of you, these clients might not be a brand new thing.
