How To Install PortableApps

Many of you have probably looking for a safe way to surf the Internet without leaving tracks (cookies, temporary files, Temporary Internet files) or to view video or text files without leaving any trace. Actually, there are many solutions to hide your tracks and delete any recently opened or temporary files. This is not all: why not read your email from any machine although there's no email client installed? All these questions have an answer: portability.


There's a lot easier solution to all the above mentioned issues: 'PortableApps'. This is a suite of applications including a collection of portable apps including a web browser, email client, office suite, calendar/scheduler, instant messaging client, antivirus, sudoku game, backup utility and integrated menu. PortableApps can be installed on a USB Flash memory stick and will allow you to carry with you document, audio and video files, bookmarks, emails, everything you need (of course, this depends on the size of your Flash stick.

The installation of the suite is very easy. Just download the setup kit and run it. First, you will be prompted to select the removable drive location. It is recommendable to be installed in the root. Click 'Install'. The installation may takke a while.

 

 

 

 

 

When the installation process is complete, the removable drive will be labeled 'PortableApps'. An 'Autorun' file will be created on your removable drive for quick access to 'PortableApps'. Now, all that's left to do is start using it and customize it.

Unlike Ubuntu which is packaged with Gnome, for the KDE desktop that comes with Kubuntu is a little bit harder to find native clients, or clients which fit good on your desktop. However, there are a couple of clients which are accesibile: KTorrent and qBittorrent. There is another client which fits with Kubuntu, but being available only as source package makes it to be appropriate for the advanced users. If you're OK with the source code compiling, then go ahead for FatRat, otherwise, stick to the already existing clients.
