How To Configure A POP3 Email Account in Opera
By Admin
Published: February 15, 2008
Print    Email

Setting up one or several email is quite an easy thing to do, but that's not all. Now, it's best to configure each account, especially if you have several accounts. IN order to configure an account we'll go to the 'Tools' section in the Opera browser menu and select 'Mail and chat accounts'.

Since we already have an account (at least), the following window will open allowing us to select which account to edit. Click once on the account to select it and then click 'Edit'.

The account options are grouped into tabs as follows: 'General', 'Servers', 'Incoming', 'Outgoing'.
In the 'General' tab you can edit the account name, your name, mail address, organization. You can also add contacts as 'Cc' or 'Bcc'. In the 'Reply-to' field you can enter another email.

In the 'Servers' tab you can edit the incoming and outgoing server names, the type of authentication (if necessary) and your username and password in case your password had been changed or reset. Attention:  You can't change your password using these settings. Opera's email client usually sets the ports automatically and there's no need to alter them unless noticed by the sysadmin.

The 'Incoming' tab deals with the received emails. You can choose to leave them on the server, but be careful to check your inbox on the server for space. The nice option here is the fact that you can set Opera's email client to automatically check for messages at a time interval of your choice. New messages can be set to trigger a sound to get your attention.

The  'Outgoing' tab deals with settings for the messages you send. You can select the encoding, queue messages for sending them after you've checked your email for new messages, automatically add contacts to your address book and show a warning when you attempt to send a message without subject. Last, but not least, there's a field where you can add your signature to be displayed on every email you send (for example: John Smith, Softips Ltd, Phone 12345677).

That's pretty much all about configuring Opera's integrated email client application.

First, open Opera browser and in the menu go to 'Tools' - 'Mail and chat accounts'.

When you click on this section, the following dialog window will show up:

Click 'Yes' to proceed to the next step. In the window shown below you need to select 'Regular e-mail (POP)' by clicking it once and then click 'Next'.

NOw, this is the email account configuration wizard. Hereunder, you neeed to eter your name if you wish the recipients to identify you, fill in your email address and organization (optional). Click 'Next'.

Here you need to enter your login name which is the first part of your email address (for example, if your email is name@server.com, you need to enter 'name' - without '@server.com').

In the last step, the wizard will configure your incoming and outgoing servers depending on the email address you've previously entered. It's up to you whether to leave the messages on the server or not. Some account require a secure connection. This option will have to be checked only if stated by your sysadmin.

All set now. You are ready to send and receive emails using Opera's integrated e-amil client.

The following window will pop up.

First, you can choose the download destination (click on the 'Choose' button) , so that you will remember where you've saved the downloaded files.

Then, you can modify the 'BitTorrent Preferences' (optional) You may want to use this option in case you are sharing an Internet connection and you don't wish to occupy all the badwidth. By clicking this button, you will have access to settings such as the maximum download/upload speed and the incoming listening port.

In order to make sure everything is ok, click the 'Test' button. If there are no problems, the image below should appear.

Now, let's go back to the first image. After configuring and testing the connection, all you nned is to click 'Yes' in order to start the download. In Opera's 'Transfers' tab will show up something similar as in the picture below.

qBittorrent - Kubuntu BitTorrent Client
(Kubuntu)Published: July 10, 2008

Unlike Ubuntu which is packaged with Gnome, for the KDE desktop that comes with Kubuntu is a little bit harder to find native clients, or clients which fit good on your desktop. However, there are a couple of clients which are accesibile: KTorrent and qBittorrent. There is another client which fits with Kubuntu, but being available only as source package makes it to be appropriate for the advanced users. If you're OK with the source code compiling, then go ahead for FatRat, otherwise, stick to the already existing clients.

Using BitTorrent clients under Ubuntu - Azureus
(Ubuntu)Published: June 13, 2008

Although under Linux you won't find BitTorrent clients such as uTorrent and BitComet which are popular under Windows OS, or at least you can't run them under as native binaries, however you can find very good alternatives. Since I am going to write about Ubuntu clients, thus appropriate for the Gnome desktop environment, I am not going to mention the clients which are typical for KDE. Under Gnome there are some popular clients such as Deluge, Transmission, and Azureus. However, Deluge and Azureus have Windows builds, thus for some of you, these clients might not be a brand new thing.
