Unlike Ubuntu which is packaged with Gnome, for the KDE desktop that comes with Kubuntu is a little bit harder to find native clients, or clients which fit good on your desktop. However, there are a couple of clients which are accesibile: KTorrent and qBittorrent. There is another client which fits with Kubuntu, but being available only as source package makes it to be appropriate for the advanced users. If you're OK with the source code compiling, then go ahead for FatRat, otherwise, stick to the already existing clients.

KTorrent

You don't need any effort in order to obtain KTorrent as this is the default BitTorrent client for Kubuntu. You can find it under the 'K' menu, under the 'Internet' submenu. It has a decent set of features which may please even the advanced users. Since this article is targeted at beginners, I'm going to explain just the basics.

The KTorrent usage follows the same steps as most of the other existing clients. You would need the .torrent file for starters. Then, after you have the .torrent file, you need to open it from KTorrent. The application provides multiple ways of opening the BitTorrent file: you can click the 'Open' button from the interface (the blue directory icon), or you can pick the 'Open' item from the 'File' menu. You can even use a keyboard shortcut which is 'Ctr+O'.

Then you have to pick the directory where the download should be saved. Under normal circumstances, you won't need anything else besides this.

If you accomplish these few simple steps, then you managed to download with KTorrent.

Well, that's it. You don't have to follow any more steps for basic usage. In time, you can get accustomed with its structure and its tabbed interface. If you close the main window, then by default the client automatically goes to the system tray, thus you won't have to enable any feature for this kind behavior.

Using BitTorrent clients under Ubuntu - Azureus
(Ubuntu)Published: June 13, 2008

Although under Linux you won't find BitTorrent clients such as uTorrent and BitComet which are popular under Windows OS, or at least you can't run them under as native binaries, however you can find very good alternatives. Since I am going to write about Ubuntu clients, thus appropriate for the Gnome desktop environment, I am not going to mention the clients which are typical for KDE. Under Gnome there are some popular clients such as Deluge, Transmission, and Azureus. However, Deluge and Azureus have Windows builds, thus for some of you, these clients might not be a brand new thing.
